Gurgaon Durga Puja 2011: When culture meets festivity
If you are Bengali and yet to figure out where to go for Ostomi Pushpanjali then DLF Phase 1, Palam Vihar and Sector 56 Gurgaon are good options. The pujas in these places will immediately make you feel at home.

THE USUAL hustle bustle of the Gurgaon traffic, people going to work and life moving on unperturbed would fail to register on the minds that it is the second day of Durga Puja. However, the scene changes as soon as one enters a pandal in any locality. Small children decked in finery, women in red bindi and cotton sari, and men in kurta pajama with the slokas in the air is a clear indication that Soptomi anjali has started and Bengali’s are enjoying the pujas to the fullest.

Pujas have become much more commercialised with stalls at every mandap. The spread of technology is evident by people with an LSR instead of a Kodak camera and children updating Facebook with their Blackberry. Change is the way of life but people must know their roots and this is what each Bengali Puja in Gurgaon wants; that the next generation should have knowledge of their roots.

Dhak, Dhunuchi (earthern pot having a coconut shell) and the slokas do make the pujas of Sector 56, DLF Phase 1 and Palam Vihar, special and so do the cultural programmes. Where on one hand in every place local kids are encouraged to perform on the other hand people such as Debojit, Jojo and various artistes from Kolkata are called from Bengal to entertain. As these societies cater mainly to the Bengali taste hence various bands and talents from Bengal are invited to entertain the people.

All these cultural societies are funded by members and get good sponsorship from corporate houses. As pointed out by the President of DLF Phase 1 Durga Committee, the corporate people were little shy of sponsorship this year. One reason might be the side effect of recession that even the Indian corporate is feeling. Apart from these corporate houses members come forward to help out and organise the Puja, whereby people worship Ma Durga.
