Gurgaon journey becomes toll free for next 15 days

No toll would be collected at the Sirhaul Toll Plaza for next 15 days, starting tonight, according to the orders from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The directive would mark an end to the serpentine traffic jams at the plaza, at least for a fortnight.

MAINTAINING THAT the mechanism to collect toll was not sufficient and led to frequent traffic jams, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has passed an order saying that no toll should be collected for the next 15 days, starting tonight.

The court was responding to a petition by Toll Hatao Sangarsh Samiti (THSS), a Gurgaon-based citizens group. It had earlier ordered that sufficient number of booths need to be setup so that traffic congestion could be cut down.

Though Haryana government had deputed 165 traffic police personnel and other higher officers to manage the traffic at the toll plaza, yet the system failed to deliver, apparently due to less number of collection windows.

The court had also directed the concerned firm to install five cash lanes on each side and in that manner, six cars/ vehicles will get clearance in one go in one lane. “All five temporary windows shall be equipped with mini computers to be certified by the official of NHAI. In this way there will be extra (50) fifty numbers of windows for issuing toll tickets and in this way the traffic situation will be smooth,” the court had directed.

The Sangharsh Samiti is planning to hold a huge demonstration on 9th September at the toll plaza , demanding that toll passage should be made free for Gurgaon residents.

Todays journey was a pleasent surprise. Only it took 2 minutes to cross the Toll Plaza while earlier it was 15-30 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the evening.

Hats off to TOLL HATAO SANGHARSH SAMITEE which took the matter to the High Court which in turn has given some relief to the commuters though temporary.

It was a smooth drive today. The Hon'ble Court may consider the permanent abolition of the toll plaza.
