GURGAON HAS the dubious distinction of having an accident rate, which is five times the national average. Recently, the Gurgaon police commissioner S S Deswal, while speaking at a function had come down heavily on the city residents for indulging in drunken driving. The commissioner had said that a large number of accidents in the could be prevented if people refrain from mixing drinking and driving.
He had reiterated that police will not allow such people to endanger the life of common citizens on the road. On Saturday, as part of the drive to prevent drunken driving on weekends, police officials carried out checking of around four hundred vehicles in Gurgaon East, West and on the national highway. While the offenders were taken to task, the rest of the drivers were sensitied about the problems of drunken driving and told about the repercussions.
The drive started late night after 10 pm, and vehicles were checked at Sirhaul, Kherki Daula and Hero Honda Chowk. Besides this, checking was carried out at Mahavir Chowk, Agarsen Chowk, the crossing of Sector 4 and 7, Atul Kataria Chowk and Maharana Pratap Chowk. It is pertinent to mention here that Gurgaon has one per cent vehicles of the country but the share of accidents is alnmost 10 per cent. Massive amount of resources and precious lives are lost on the Gurgaon roads due to these accidents.
