Gurgaon Police releases guidelines for Schools to ensure safety of children
Gurgaon Police has come out with a set of comprehensive guidelines for all schools in Gurgaon with the goal of making children safer. The guidelines are easily accessible on the Gurgaon Police website, and focus on simple, preventive measures that every school should take with a focus both on minimizing risks as well as equipping children to handle them in a confident manner.

The draft guidelines were presented to Gurgaon citizens on 27th August when Gurgaon Police held a consultative meeting attended by about 600 people (over 250 school principals, concerned parents, NGOs, members of police/civil administration) – all pooling ideas on improving safety of children at schools.

Police Commissioner Alok Mittal opines ''Children spend a large part of their day in schools and while travelling to and from their schools. Their safety during this time is exceedingly important. While many schools already take this responsibility seriously, in other basic safety measures are not followed. This document provides a basic checklist so schools can cover any gaps in their procedures. While the focus is largely on preventing child abuse, it also cover risks children may face due to physical, structural or other hazards. Many mishaps can easily be prevented with just a simple system in place.

''DCP (East) Naazneen Bhasin added, '' It is very significant that these guidelines have been prepared with inputs from concerned parents, NGOs, members of civil & police administration, judiciary, media, experts in related fields of child safety/psychology. This has become a citizens' movement because safety of our children is everyone's concern. The guiding principle is 'parents to be empowered, schools to be sensitized' and through it we hope to make every school in Gurgaon a completely safe zone for children.''

Legal and child safety experts present at the panel discussion endorsed the view that child safety can be greatly enhanced if schools, parents and the police partner together in this important effort. An eminent legal expert added that schools cannot write off their responsibility by getting parents to sign off on any document, as this is against the law, and the school has a very clear responsibility for safety of the child while in their care, be at school, on a school bus or a school trip"Mr Alok Mittal added: It is important that all 3 stakeholders work together on this critical aspect that directly impacts safety of our children.

A parent said, ''We total agree with the view that it is better to prevent a crime that have to call in the police to solve it later, and are very glad that Gurgaon Police has taken this initiative. It will help bring all schools to a level which ensures basic safety of all children.''
