Gurgaon RWA's taken initiative to reduce crime in their area
The residents of a number of colonies near Sector 56 and Sector 57 of Gurgaon were scared with the raising incidents of theft and chain snatching in the area. Trying to secure their residents, they took some effective steps. They installed gates at various parts of these gated colonies and are further planning to install CCTV's at each gate.

The vast vacant plots near the sectors are a constant threat for everyone residing there, as the unauthorized jhuggis are becoming constant source of thefts and criminal activities. Hence to tighten their security the residents of the sectors along with the Resident Welfare Association's (RWA) installed the gates as a collective measure to improve the security of the area.

AC Agnihotri, RWA, General Secretary of Sushant Lok Extn. II and III talked about the whole initiative and said that the funds were released by the government of Haryana. “After listening to our problems the Government of Haryana has released the funds for the installation of gates. We have installed around 18 gates in our area, and now we are planning to install CCTV's at the gates,” said Agnihotri.

He also added, “Before installing the gates, there used to be 7 to 8 thefts in a month, but now the number has reduced. Still we are not happy with the security guards, as they are not doing their work properly and we are now pursuing this matter. We will talk to the Ross Security solutions, who are providing the security to our sector about this issue.”

This citizen's initiative has also helped the police in that area. Mahinder Singh, the SHO of Sector 56 Police station says, “Earlier we used to register 5 to 7 cases of robbery and chain snatching every month, but after the installation of gates the number has reduced. The RWA's have taken a good step as this will help both the police and the residents.”

Can such a model be replicated in other parts of Gurgaon?

Palam Vihar, which is a huge area and has many robberies and chain snatching cases, has tried to replicate such model. But the RWA's had some problems in implementing the model. Ashok Rana, RWA President Palam Vihar, Sector 23 discussed about the problems with us saying, “Safety in this area is very less, because of the juggis nearby and a huge open space. We tried talk to HUDA and the concerned authorities about installing gates to prevent the incidents of chain snatching and robbery in the area, but they are not responding.”

He also said, “Sector 23, Palam Vihar is a very huge area it needs a budget of 20 lakhs to install gates in the area and the residents cannot afford to contribute such a huge amount. We request the concerned authorities to take up this issue.”

The police of Palam Vihar is also concerned about the safety in the area, they have increased the patrolling during the night, but still the cases persist. Raj pal, Hawaldar at Palam Vihar Police Station says, “As Palam Vihar is a huge area, security is a big issue here. The robberies are comparatively low in the gated communities like Sector 21 and 22, but coming to Sector 23 and few other places in Palam Vihar safety is an issue. We have tried our best to look upon the security over those places, but then the residents also should cooperate with us.”
