The initiative, a part of the Haryana Transport department, will have 490 radio cabs in Gurgaon plying in the next two months. The other cities benefiting from the initiative will also include Faridabad and Panchkula.
FOR ALL those who have been cribbing about the lack of basic travel infrastructure in Gurgaon can now breathe a sigh of relief. With the inclusion of radio taxi’s in the city, courtesy an initiative of the Radio Cab Scheme launched by the Haryana Transport Department, 11 cab operators have already applied for licenses for plying 815 radio cabs in Gurgaon.

The 170 radio cabs, which will be operating in Gurgaon, will run under the contract carriage permit and the operators have shown interest in increasing the number of cabs in its fleet to 490.Apart from Gurgaon, the scheme will be launched in Faridabad and Panchkula as well. The radio cabs in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Panchkula will be categorised into three categories, viz, economy, luxury and super luxury.
Faridabad is likely to have 170 radio cabs plying on the roads on the licenses applied by two operators and Panchkula will see 155 radio cabs cruising across the town under the licenses filed by two operators.However, the contracts will be offered by the state transportation ministry only after a close examination of their forms. The move was confirmed by Haryana Transport Minister OP Jain who added that the service will provide non-stop connectivity amongst these three places and the cabs will also feature a GPRS based tracking system with electronic meters, taking into consideration the interests of the passengers.
