Gurgaonites don't want any liquor shops in green belt 03 April, 2012
Liquor shops are the prime reason for hooliganism in Gurgaon. Nisha Singh, MCG councilor and a citizen journalist talks about the need to come forward to support the Public Interest Litigation, she recently filed in a Gurgaon Court.

IT NEITHER happens in Delhi nor in Noida. So why should we accept this nuisance in our city, especially when the police strength to population ratio is one third that of Delhi. No wonder we get to hear of road side horror stories almost every day.

I, along with Mr. Divakar Prasad, IPS (Retd.) and former Director General and Col. Oberoi, filed a Public Interest Litigation in a Gurgaon Court to challenge the implementation of the Haryana Excise Policy, which though clearly states that “retail liquor outlets in urban areas may preferably be located in the market places”, in Gurgaon we find that majority of the liquor vends, are located along major roads, roundabouts and traffic signals. It is govt. land (in other words public land i.e. yours and mine) mostly footpaths, greenbelts and slip roads where these vends have come up.

Gurgaon is an unplanned concrete city. We have designated green belts but hardly any greenery because they are encroached left and right. The gate keeper i.e. the government does not have any moral right to stop this encroachment because it is itself encouraging encroachment by issuing licenses to liquor vends on greenbelts along roadsides.

This is not about not having liquor shops. It’s about having these at the appropriate places like malls, shopping markets and other commercial establishments.

But as we have seen in democracy, logic and intellect does not count much, it is the number that matters. If you strongly believe that we need to rid our city of this nuisance then we need to show strength of numbers. Corrective actions will not happen if there is not a general consensus built on the issue. I hope people in Gurgaon will come forward to show support and share their views and experiences. Hopefully, we will together build a safer and secure Gurgaon that we can proudly call the Millennium City.

Thanks for taking the initiatives of filing a PIL We are with you Nisha But I am pessimist when it comes to this particular issue In Gurgaon Liquor shops are owned and managed by people well connected with political and corporate lobby I don't think much will come out of this movement Apart from the one liquor shop made right on the IFFCO Chowk I haven't seen any other 'theka' being removed Golf course Road saw some cleaning up in recent days - thanks to HUDA chief But have you seen Columbia Asia Hospital entrance in Palam Vihar There is a liquor shop right outside the hospital gate Even merinews reported it - but what's the use No actions taken
