Even as private hospitals in Gurgaon are making special arrangements for Diwali, a festival that witnesses increased number of burn incidents, the only special burns ward in the Civil Hospital Gurgaon is surprisingly non-functional.
HOSPITALS IN the city such as Medanta, Artemis, and Paras in the Millennium City have arranged for special teams to ensure that burn victims are taken care of in case of casualities. But the administration at the Civil Hospital in Gurgaon seems to have made no plans to help people who are often injured while playing with crackers during Diwali.

It is pertinent to mention that private hospitals are equipped to handle cases with only 30 per cent burn injury. The ward at the Civil Hospital was allocated a budget of Rs 43 lakh and it was expected that it will bring about a sea change as patients would not have to go to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi for further treatment.
It was also promised that a special team of doctors would be appointed at the Civil Hospital to man this special ward but no action has been taken so far. Gurgaon witnesses around 100 burn cases on Diwali and some of these are critical but the patients are forced to go to Delhi for specialised treatment.
Officials, meanwhile, admit that although the ward was opened in May it has not become fully functional. Some more time is needed to make this service fully available to users, they aver. One of the local residents Ajay Kumar, said that the manner in which civil hospital works it will need another year to make the ward functional.
