Gurgaon's Senior Citizen Cell needs publicity as people are unaware of it
“I am not aware that a Senior Citizen Cell exist in Gurgaon. There is no publicity and no advertisement for the same. You tell me what is the helpline number and is it even working?” This was the question thrown at me by John F William, a Gurgaon resident, who in spite of his growing age is aware of the major changes that take place in Gurgaon. Thus, it seems that the Senior Citizen Cell and the Women Cell, which had been in place for quite some time is not actually helping Gurgaon's citizens.
According to the Gurgaon police, the senior citizen Cell was inaugurated on February 20, 2013, whose helpline number is 0124-2221559. The line is open 24x7 and takes in complaints from the senior citizens of the city around the clock. Almost a year and the cell has recorded 196 complaints, out of which 191 have been dealt with. The police claims that all the complains have been taken care of by the officers on duty.
As compared to the Senior Citizen Cell, the women cell is far more popular among the residents, owing to the recent harassment and rape cases in the city. Rashmi Mukherjee, a working lady and a resident of Gurgaon feels, “Women cell is a good initiative. How functional is that, I won't be able to say as I have thankfully never used it but it is good that we have something, which takes care of women.”
Since one women cell was not sufficient, the Gurgaon police have started two cells. Two ACP ranked woman police officer has also been appointed in the city. The toll free number 1091 has been helpful so far in registering 7705 complaints. 17 of these complaints were of rape, eve teasing 148, stalking 70, sexual harassment 7, domestic violence 542 and others were 1766.
According to the Gurgaon Police, they have women officers in and around key locations such as schools and colleges. For those women who travel in the city on daily basis, Rapid Metro is proving to be a boon. The city has also started verification of auto across the city.
