Gurjars finally got the much sought after reservation in Rajasthan after Congress government got the Reservation Bill approved by state Governor. The Bill was pending ever since the erstwhile BJP government got it passed in Assembly.
Gurjars in Rajasthan are elated over the government decision to grant five per cent reservations in government jobs and educational institutions, a demand for which the community has shed a lot of blood and fought pitched battles, since last three years.
Recently, Gurjars had issued an ultimatum to the Rajasthan government to deliver on the promised reservation, which forced the state to get its act together and ensure that the Bill pending with Governor Shailendra Kumar Singh gets formal approval.
The Reservation Bill not only provides 5 per cent reservation to the Gurjars and three other communities, but it also has a provision of 14 per cent reservation for Economically Backward Classes (EBCs). This decision also makes Rajasthan the first state to implement reservations on the basis of economic status.
Legal experts, however, opined that the grant of reservation could hit a legal roadblock as it takes the overall reservation quota to 68 per cent, 18 per cent more than the 50 per cent ceiling ruled by the Supreme Court.
Gujjar reservation Bill was pending with the state Governor since last year, as the erstwhile BJP government had passed it in haste to mollify the agitating Gujjars.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan chief minister, Ashok Gehlot said that the Bill had become an Act after getting approval from the the state Governor. He also assured that the government will implement the act as soon as possible, adding Congress never opposed reservations to Gujjars and economically backward classes.
