THOUGH IN the embryonic stage, Amritsar based Guru Arjan Dev Institute of Development Studies has got added another distinction in his cap. Earlier the institute becomes academic partner of UN Global Compact. Within less than a year of its establishment, the institute has now been inducted into the The Global Water Partnership's founded by the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) to foster integrated water resource management (IWRM), and to ensure the coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources by maximizing economic and social welfare without compromising the sustainability of vital environmental systems.

The Global Water Partnership (GWP) was created in 1996 and at present has become active in 13 regions and over 70 countries. GWP is committed to the Dublin-Rio principles and to manage water resources aiming at a fair balance of economic efficiency, social equity and ecosystem sustainability. Global Water Partnership which is focusing its attention on water rights and access to clean water. The Dublin Conference on Water and the Environment in 1992 and the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 that a more comprehensive approach to water management was judged necessary for sustainable development. This awareness, together with the need for participatory institutional mechanisms related to water, called for a new coordinating organization. This initiative was based on promoting and implementing integrated water resources management through the development of a worldwide network that could pull together financial, technical, policy and human resources to address the critical issues of sustainable water management.


Guru Arjan Dev Institute of Development Studies was inducted to Global Water Partnership and will be collaborating with groups working on water rights and Integrated Water Resource Management. GWP vision is for a water secure world. Its mission is to support the sustainable development and management of water resources at all levels.


The director of the institute, Dr Gursharan Singh Kainth further disclose that Dr K Kasturirangan, Member Planning Commission will inaugurate the seminar on Management of Natural resources and Environment in India in the conference hall of Guru Nanak Bhawan of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Dr Katar Singh Chairman of INREM of Anand and Dr Kausar Jamal Cheema , Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences of Lahore College of Women University Lahore will deliver key note papers. Among others key speakers at the seminar includes Dr Vishwa Ballabh of Jamshedpur, Dr L K Jha of Shillong; Dr Robert John Chandran of Bangalore, Dr M N Murty of Delhi, Dr Vinod Kumar Sharma of Delhi.

 
Various technical session will be chaired by Dr Ravinderal Singh of International Water Management Institute; Dr Veena Khanduri of India Water Partnership; Dr K S Verma of Dr Y S Parma University of forestry & Horticulture, Solan and Dr B K Sahu of Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. Nearly seventy papers will be presented at the seminar by different scholars both from India and aborad.
