To mark the birthday of the founder of the Sikh religion Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the solemn Guruparb will be celebrated on November 10 across India and the world.
GURU NANAK Jayanti, which is also popular as Guruparb, will be celebrated on November 10 across India and the world - among the Sikh community - marking the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev. This is the highest, and auspicious religious festival amongst the Sikhs.
Guru Nanak Dev was born in 1469 in the village of Talwandi, which is now popular as Nankana Sahib, near Lahore, Pakistan. He was the founder of Sikhism and the first Sikh guru out of ten gurus. Every year Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrated on the Kartik Poornima.
The auspicious festival of the Sikhs is celebrated for three days, and it started with the 48 hours non-stop recitation of holy book Guru Granth Sahib in gurudwaras. On the eve of Guru Nanak Jayanti, people from the community assembled at the gurudwaras for prabhat pheris, and move to different localities singing hymns or shabads.
For the celebration of Guruparb, gurudwaras are decorated with lights and other decorative items. On Guru Nanak Jayanti, thousands of people gather at the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, the Golden Temple, in Amritsar, and take a dip in the holy tank or sarover. On this festival, langar is served to people present at the gurudwara - and people volunteer as part service and devotion towards guru.
