GURU PURNIMA is the day dedicated to the sage Ved Vyasa, who is credited with writing the Mahabarata, the Srimad Bhagavata, and 18  Puranas. Ved Vyasa also edited the Vedas; in fact it was Ved Vyasa who had classified all Vedic hymns into the four Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva) based on their rites. Some Vaishnavites regard him as the avatar of Vishnu. Guru Purnima is observed on the full moon day that occurs in the period of July-August. This year, Guru Purnima is celebrated on July 7 2009.

There are specific rituals that may be conducted on Guru Purnima, but above all this is a day when spiritual gurus are recalled for their teachings and their life's dedication. It is believed that the satseva (service of the absolute truth) performed on Guru Purnima earns special blessings from the guru who is being revered. On this day, it is common for pujas (guru puja) to be offered to the guru. Farmers in several communities also observe this day which is regarded as the harbinger of rains. In past centuries, this was the day when those on spiritual quests would commence their study of and discussions on sacred texts.
