An FIR (First Information Report) was lodged by T-Series (Super Cassettes Industries Ltd) against Guruji.com alleging that it makes available the musical content owned by T-series online for free.
A music oriented desi search engine Guruji.com was started by two IIT-Delhi graduates. It has raised capital from Sequoia and Sandstone Capital. Users of Guruji.com are allowed to locate and play music from sites like Songs.pk, MusicPlug.in, PZ10.com and BollyMobile.in.
Guruji.com is not the first website to be under copyright infringement allegations. Earlier this year in February, Six Google employees were arrested in Italy for a similar copyright infringement incident. The CEO of Baazee.com (ebay.in) was arrested due to the sale of pornographic material on the portal in 2004.
Legal counsel for T-Series, Rahul Ajatshatru said that this was a criminal action taken by police after examining the complaint filed by T-Series and examining the website. The police, he informed, seized the equipment and also arrested some executives during the raid.
Commenting on the arrest, T-Series VP digital content Neeraj Kalyan claimed that Guruji.com was infringing on the copyright under the garb of a search engine as it was working in nexus with some music pirates.
