BORN ON september 1, 1923 at Raipur in chhattisgarh, Habib Tanvir was schooled in Nagpur. He was organizer, secretary, playwright and actor-director of the Progressive and Secular Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) from 1948-50.He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA),London, in 1955 and travelled thereafter in Europe during 1956-57.

He wrote and acted in plays like Agra bazaar(1954) Charandas Chor, Moteram ka satyagraha and others that became milestones in contemporary Indian theatre history. He was the first to produce a fusion of chhattisgarhi, Pandavni and Nacha folk dance and song forms of his region in his theatre, bringing urban and rural actors together in one production. His plays have a varied bandwidth of ‘content’.He adapted successfully from Sanskrit drama, Shakespeare, Tribal and folk themes and contemporary European satire. He also acted in nine feature films, including a role in Richard attenborough’s Gandhi.
Best known works : Agra bazaar(1954), Shatranj ki mohren (1954), Lala sohrat rai (1954), Mitti ki gadi (1958), Gaon ka naam sasural—mor naam damaad (1973), Charandas chor(1975), Uttar Ram charitra ( 1977), Bahadur kalarin (1978), Ponga pandit (1989), Jis lahore nai dekhya (1990), Kamdeo ka apna basant ritu ka sapna(1993),Zahreeli Hawa ( 2002) and Rajrakt (2006)Habib tanvir passed away in June last year. Indian People's Theatre Association(IPTA) Raipur Chapter has organized ‘Theatre festival’ from 5th to 8th June, 2010 as homage to great fusion explorer.
