THE HARROWING and devastating earthquake that occurred last month on January 12 and killed around 225000 people and left millions homeless has broken all UN aid record. Latest reports emanating from UN headquarter has said that UN has increased its humanitarian appeal for the rehabilitation of sorrow marred Haiti to $1.14 billion. Till date it is an all-time high humanitarian aid call by UN and its allied agencies, surpassing $1.41 billion amassed for the shattering 2004 Asian Tsunami.
Sharing details on Haiti’s rehabilitation, UN head honcho Ban Ki-moon said “The rainy season is coming to Haiti, hence it will be extremely important to provide on a priority basis shelters, sanitation and other necessary humanitarian assistance."
John Holmes, who is heading UN Humanitarian department had stressed on the importance of record aid for earthquake hit Haiti and appealed for more global support, “To meet the needs of the people of Haiti, we will require more of the generous global support that we have seen so far”, he said.
Former American president Bill Clinton, the special UN envoy for Haiti had urged people from all sections of the society to come forward breaking all barriers in reconstructing ruined Haiti. One of the leading global figures in international scenario Mr Clinton said “Pledge and give it, do it sooner”. He also discussed an important step-tracking of donation, he said his special envoy website would allow donors to check and access where donations are being used, minimizing corruption and misuse of funds.
No issue is beyond solution, it is the resolve of the mankind that matters. The Haiti earthquake had once again proved that world is a big family and together we can win all battles.
