IN RECENT years there has been an increase in the singing talent shows in India. Sa Re Ga Ma, and Indian Idol are in vogue as they appeal to the public as well as many talented artistes have got a platform to rise from. The picture of Indian music has changed with changing times. True that competition has increased but the chances to impress a music composer have also increased with it. Inspite of this scenario, India is still to produce another Lata Mangeshkar. The Nightingale of India turned 82 today and yet she is the only one reigning supreme till date in the Indian music scenario.

She started singing when she was just 5 years of age under the guidance of her father who was a theatre artiste. Coming from a humble abode with three other siblings, Lata started her career in Mumbai in the 1940s. Music was always a part of her life, and she was God gifted, as many would later say. On the very first day of her school she was caught teaching other kids music. She was scolded and was asked not to do it again and the future singer became so angry that she refused to go to school from there on.
Lata Mangeshkar is synonymous with the words melodious and heart rendering music and she has conquered a great deal with her music. She is the second vocalist to have been awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, and has also featured in the Guinness Book of World record from 1974 to 1991. At the age of 82 she is still going strong. It seems that her voice grows sweeter by the day.
During the time when Nutan was the heroine, she used to do the playback for her and the same lady did the playback for Nutan’s niece Kajol decades later. Her voice is like silk and fits in with every face. Not only singing, she has also judged shows and has composed Marathi songs. Lata Mangeshkar recorded songs for over a thousand Bollywood movies and has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages. This dynamic lady is still going strong at an age of 82 and the audience cannot have enough of her.
