Harassed for helping an injured boy
For helping an injured boy on a road, Rachna had to face the abuse and harassment from his relatives, thanks to the wrong statement by a police officer. She will never forget this incident and unfortunately, it will send a wrong message across the board and people would hesitate to help others.

ROHIT, A 25-year-old boy was lying in a pool of blood on Delhi ring road but nobody from the crowd around bothered to call for ambulance or drive him to hospital. It so happened that a young lady from Kanpur who was in town for a seminar that evening managed to take the injured boy to AIIMS. Rachna Gupta contacted the boy’s relatives and recorded her name and address in the hospital register. Unfortunately boy’s life couldn’t be saved and he died next day.

Hauz Khas police kept on contacting her again and again, asking her to visit the police station to record her statement. Finally when she visited in January, 2012 her signature was obtained on a very wrong document which goes against her now. Meanwhile the police also informed Rohit’s relatives who reached at the police station and started abusing/ harassing her.

This is how Ms Gupta, a kind lady had been treated so far though DCP police has assured that necessary action will be taken against the defaulting police officer. Even under section 160 of IPC, there is a directive from the Supreme Court of India that a statement can be taken/ given at any station and the investigating police officer can’t on his own record a statement.

After reading the recorded coverage of Dainik Jagran, Delhi dated 08.1.2012; people will never like to come forward to help any injured person. Police must extend their helping hand instead of forcefully harassing the public. Certainly Ms Gupta will never forget this incident in her life and would rather advise others not to help needy.
