HARBHAJAN SINGH became the third Indian and 22nd cricketer in the world to claim 300 wickets in Test cricket on Friday (November 7). He achieved this feat after dismissing Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain on the second day of the fourth and final Test.

Singh, who is playing his 72nd Test, is now enlisted behind only two former Indian cricketers - Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev. While Kumble has bagged 619 wickets in 132 Tests, Kapil Dev has 434 scalps from 131 Test matches. Bhajji is now the fifth spinner in the world to join the 300-wicket club after Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lankan off-spinner (756), Shane Warne, Australian leg-spinner (708), Anil Kumble, Indian leg-spinner (619) and Lance Gibbs, West Indian right arm off break (309). In India, he is the second spinner after Kumble to touch this feat.

As he claimed the wicket of Ponting, Harbhajan also touched his 200th wicket on the Indian soil. Harbhajan has dismissed Ponting 10 times so far. Bhajji, the famous and fiery Indian off-spinner, made his Test debut against Australia in Bangalore in March 1998. He has also bagged 195 One Day International (ODI) wickets in 175 matches.

His career was under question when investigations started against his bowling action and disciplinary incidents that irked the higher authorities. But in 2001, when the leading leg spinner Kumble was injured, Harbhajan was brought into India team once again by the legendary Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India went on to achieve a series victory over Australia, while Harbhajan established himself as one of the most dependable arms of Indian cricket team by taking 32 wickets. In that series, Harbhajan aka the Turbanator also made the record of a hat trick in Test cricket against Australia as an Indian bowler.

In late 2004, Harbhajan had become the regular choice for India team. In early 2008, he was banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as he vilified the Australian batsman, Andrew Symonds. The ban was revoked upon appeal in April. Again Harbhajan was surrounded with controversy when he slapped Sreesanth during Indian Premier League tournament. Consequently, he was banned from the 2008 Indian Premier League and suspended from the ODI team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). But cricket lovers will never forget Bhajji’s contribution to Indian cricket and that’s why he is still considered as one the most adorable Indian player.
