it was the pair of Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar who fought bravely till the end keeping match in balance till the last ball was bowled. They scored record 84 runs for the eighth wicket consuming only 57 balls hitting ball all around the ground.
THE FIRST ODI of the seven match series had a nail biting finish with India losing the match in the last over by only 4 runs.

Right from the word go the pendulum switched sides every now and then and till the last ball of the match the ambiguity of the winner continued. Elected to bat first after winning the toss, the visitors scored a challenging total of 292 losing 8 wickets. For the visitors’, captain Ricky Ponting played captains inning when initially the ship was supposed to sink under the superb bowling of Ashish Nehra and Ishant Sharma scoring magnificent 74 runs.

He was ably supported by reliable Mike Hussey, Camron White and Tim Paine, they scored 73, 51 and 50 respectively. For the home side lanky pacer  Ishant Sharma was the most successful bowler, he  took three wickets while Ashish Nehra took two.

Chasing a challenging target of 293 to win, Indian team lost wickets at regular interval and at one time looked they will lose the game without much fight as they were 201 for seven. However, on Sunday when big names like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Captain MS Dhoni failed, it was the pair of Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar who fought bravely till the end keeping match in balance till the last ball was bowled. They scored record 84 runs for the eighth wicket consuming only 57 balls hitting ball all around the ground. Harbhajan  Singh missed a well deserved half century by only one run while Praveen Kumar remained not out on 40.

In the last over India required only nine of six but Harbhajan lost his wicket to Peter Siddle and it was all over. Mike Hussey was declared Man of the Match for his superb all round performance on the field with both bat and ball.
