Haryana to upgrade sports school at Rai into university; Ex-Raists concerned over fate of school
Haryana government has decided to 'upgrade' the Motilal Nehru School of Sports (MNSS) at Rai in Sonipat into a Sports University where along with the courses related to sports education, there would be provisions for preparing sportspersons in all disciplines by providing 'world-class facilities'.
Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs minister, Anil Vij has reportedly said that besides the up-gradation of the MNSS-Rai, 20 sports nurseries would be opened in each district.

For this purpose the state government would give Rs 1.25 lakh to the schools selected for creating sports nurseries. The money will be spent by selected schools for the development of infrastructure for sports nurseries.

Under the new sports promotion scheme in the state, there would be a provision of monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 to players and monthly salary to the coaches, it is learned.

However, the ex-students of the MNSS-Rai are worried about what would happen to their alma mater. All kinds of speculations are being made, will the school be dismantled, converted to the university campus school, demonstration school for sports education courses or government school with a sports nursery.

However, Mahendra Jakhar, an ex-Raist has welcomed the decision by writing a post in social media saying, "It's a good decision. Yes, we are all emotionally attached to the school. However, the school itself, in spite of the infrastructure, failed to produce any international level sportsmen recently. So, it's better that the vast campus and the facilities are made available to others. This will bring more funds, better infrastructure and more sportsmen. Yes, I feel sad about school but it seems to be a good decision."

On the other hand, another former student, Sachin Gahlawat, wrote in social media that it would have been more appropriate had the university added to the existing system rather than upgrading of the school into the university.

He said that it could work as a three-tier model of education of Kamala Nehru School (KNS), MNSS and the university since the land was not a problem.
