Has 'Baba' become a bad word? Haan Baba Haan!
With Dera Baba being convicted of rape by a CBI court and handed 20 years of rigorous imprisonment, the word 'Baba' has assumed some horrific connotations.

The kind of revelations brought out by the media by interviewing some of Dera Baba's ex-followers, it seems that Baba had an extremely criminal, money-mongering, immoral and destructive mind-set.

Dera Baba was fond of all aspects of movie making but seemingly did not like the line 'Naa Baba naa' which has been used in Bollywood songs and dialogues by the coy heroins when the heroes had got suggestive.

After all this, 'Baba' word seems have become a derogatory or abusive word. I saw two people fighting, when one called the other 'Jaggu Baba'. Earlier he was being addressed as 'Jaggu Bhai'. Even politicians have started using 'Baba' as suffix to ridicule one another. Andhra Pradesh has taken the lead in it.

In a village, when a bearded NGO head accompanied by two young female functionaries was talking to the villagers, some village youth at the end of the row of of the gathering in whispers were calling him 'NGO Baba'. You know that the Dera Baba was engaged in lot of social work including 'purifying women'.

In some recent Twitter posts, the word 'Baba' has been amalgamated with the word 'rogue'. Sample this: Rascal politicians suck up to these rogue Babas. They get the votes and the common man has to endure pain. Democracy or a farce?

Consequently a bad politician is now called a 'Politician Baba'.

Since, Dera Baba is also addressed as 'Dr Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh', in the universities, some PhD guides who harass and exploit female scholars are now being called 'Guide Babas'.

Many erstwhile followers of Dera Baba have now openly said that he was also called 'Pitaji' and rape as 'Pitaji's Maafi' and 'Pitaji's Prasad'.

Now, a news rhyme has also appeared: "Baba Black Sheep, have you any pool? Yes sir... Yes sir, a small one to drool".

However, in many Asian countries Baba is used for father; grandfather; wise old man; saint; priesthood.

Baba is used for Hindu and Sikh ascetics or sannyasis. It is often used as a suffix or prefix to an ascetic's name.

Baba also means a small, rich sponge cake, typically soaked in rum-flavoured syrup as per a few English dictionaries.

Baba means father in many languages, in others, it means grandma or old woman. In Farsi, the word means dad.
