A doctor beaten to death in a jail in Bihar is deplorable. Dr Buddhadev Singh's death has raised several issues regarding our apparatus for protection and security. It seems people are not safe even in a jail in Bihar. Is 'gunda raj' coming back?
BIHAR IS developing; wellbeing and security in the state has improved but is this true in reality? Some or the other incidents happen in various parts of the state, and these somewhere are taking the so-called developing state again back into the category of weak state in which there were no rules and regulations, where crime is at its best. Again the “Gunda raaj” has started to take its position. The recent incident that took place in Goplaganj, a district in Bihar, has raised the question once again that is Bihar really safe?

Dr BD Singh did not agree to provide fake medical certificates for a few criminals in the Goplaganj jail. But the objection to do an immoral activity led him to loose his precious life. Rajan Yadav, a criminal who was recently given life time imprisonment verdict for kidnapping, along with six other criminals, beat the doctor with sticks, slippers and utensils - so much so that the doctor had to be admitted in Sadar hospital, Gopalganj, immediately. Seeing his injuries the doctors referred him to Patna Medical College and hospital, which is 125 kms from there. On the way to Patna the doctor expired and with it the family lost his Mukhiya, and now the bereaved family’s tears are not stopping.Sources reveal that actually four prisoners were to be moved to central jail in 2 days and they were not ready to go as they would have been deprived of the facilities there. So initially they told the doctor to make certificates so that they could be shifted to the hospital but when this tactic didn’t work then they thought of beating the doctor so that at least an FIR will be lodged and for a trial and they will remain in jail.
To execute the plan they told the police officer to call the doctor for a check-up. The doctor went in inside the cell to carry out the check-up, and soon after seven captives started beating him and gave him serious injuries. As he was old he couldn’t bear the injury and died after a few hours. This incident generated a lot of anger amongst doctors, and an urgent meeting was called on Monday in Indian Medical Association hall where it was decided that they will go for a 24-hours strike in order to protest against the incident. The doctors are demanding a Doctor Protection Act so that this incident never occurs in the future. The chief minister Nitish Kumar has ensured that strict action will be taken but now what will the family do? The IMA doctors are demanding compensation for the bereaved family. Still, the government has not said anything. The doctors are going on a strike on May 31 and the government needs to take some strict action. It seems as if protection is just for namesake, and that people are not safe in even in a police station.
