Hassan Rouhani re-elected as Iranian president for second term
The incumbent President Hassan Rouhani has won the crucial presidential elections by defeating his closest rival cleric Ebrahim Raisi with a good margin as per the media reports emerging from Iran.

Iran had voted on May 19 in the new presidential elections in which Rouhani ran for the second term and emerged victorious against the hardliner Raisi who was also supported by Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

For Rouhani, the election was viewed as referendum on the nuclear deal that Iran struck with world powers.

Rouhani is seen as reformists and supporter of democracy in the Iranian political system. He was elected as president for his first term in 2013. It was during his term that for the first time leaders of US and Iran spoke directly since 1979.

His biggest achievement in office was the signing of the nuclear deal leading to relief from economic sanctions on Iran and a stable economy in the country.
