Healers or killers: CMC Medicos' brutality against a monkey
Hardly had one recovered from the senseless brutality shown by two Chennai medicos who flung a dog from the terrace, when the news surfaced that four medicos of CMC Vellore tortured and killed a female bonnet macaque monkey that had strayed into the men's hostel.

Chennai-based animal welfare activist Shravan Krishnan has described the manner in which the four students tortured the hapless animal. It sends a chill down one's spine because it is eerily reminiscent of the 'Nirbhaya incident' which rocked the entire country in 2012, where four men raped a young woman - who succumbed to her injuries later - on a moving bus in Delhi.

The same kind of ruthlessness and bestiality is in evident in this incident too and one is forced to ask those who are parents of sons: "What are you raising - children, or fiends in human disguise?" That these are men who are studying to become doctors whose duty is to heal sick people is even more sickening.

As it is, doctors are increasingly coming under a cloud of distrust and suspicion for fleecing patients, medical negligence and approaching medicine like a business with bottomlines and profit margins.

Under the circumstances, how will people react to such incidents? How did these monsters manage to infiltrate a profession whose practitioners are often conferred divine status because of their power to save lives? Were these men pushed into medicine because of the greed of their parents? Are they venting their frustrations on innocent animals because they cannot take it out on their parents?

All these are troubling questions that need to be asked. A lot of youngsters are being forced to pursue careers like medicine and engineering when their hearts are not in it. Can such actions be the result of a feeling that they are not in control of their lives? Only a psychologist can tell.

It goes without saying that such incidents should be taken very seriously. We cannot entrust our lives and health in the hands of such perverts and criminals. They should be expelled from the college and it should be ensured that they never get to enter a medical college again.

They need to undergo psychological treatment as well for it is a well known fact that people who abuse animals go on to commit more serious crimes including murder. Many serial killers begin their career by abusing and killing animals.

A hefty fine and a minimum five-year prison term should also be imposed on them so that they understand that snuffing out an innocent animal's life is a heinous crime. Lastly, their parents should do some serious soul-searching and ask themselves if their sons ought to be lobotomized, considering that they present a potential threat to society.
