Recently, World Health Organisation (WHO) after receiving green signal from 193 member countries has taken measures to reduce the alcoholic drinks consumption by calling for discounts to be banned and also calling for banning advertising targeting young people for drinking. WHO is also taking steps to regulate sponsors and to end charging flat rate for unlimited drinking. In some States in India, alcoholic drink addicts consume upto 3 litres or more of alcoholic drink in a week. It goes without saying their health is extremely vulnerable to direct and indirect diseases plus also the fact their families are also affected. Union Health Ministry can do well to get deep into this issue and take urgent remedial measures, some tips, as follows:
- Many Soft drink manufacturers have reduced the content of the drink in each bottle by reducing the size of the bottle while the price remains the same. On similar lines, alcoholic manufacturers can be induced to reduce the content by going in for small containers while keeping the price same.- Strong promotion through media should be made about the ill effects of consuming alcohol in big large quantity periodically; it is a fact that many top executives indulge in doing big business informally while having alcoholic drinks - but the point to be noted here is they consume only 2-3-4 sips on one occasion which could be less than five percent of the total consumption done by an hardcore alcoholic in any given day. Therefore, if hardcore alcoholic drinkers can be pursuared to curb their drinking habits drastically and go for 4-5 steps as a first preventive measure, this would do lots of good for their health and their dependent families. Some good innovative advertising need to be done to reach the message to the masses especially target group.- It is also a fact that many of the alcoholic drinkers are addicted to drinking due to some deep resentment in their hearts; through strong regular counselling their feelings should be found out and preventive measures taken to bring them to join the mainstram. Many positions of counsellors need to be created and filled in.- It is also a fact that many younsters in developing countries resort to drinking for fun as a first time experience.- Every alcohol trading shop should clearly exhibit signboards of various free HELPLINES and FREECOUNSELLING services prominently displayed for helping alcoholic drinkers getting reformed.
