Heard of Salman Rushdie but who is Ahmed Rushdie?
This might be the precise reason why Salman Rushdie wanted his second and well known name to be used for his profile in Facebook. After a long war of words the writer won - as always.

SALMAN RUSHDIE and controversy go hand in hand. Although this Indian-British author is known for his work in the literary world, recently, he has been suffering from an identity crisis or so he says as Facebook did not allow him to use his middle, Salman, as his profile identity but instead changed his name to Ahmed. The author of ‘the Satanic verses’ was enraged and not without reason as he is known to the world as Salman Rushdie and Ahmed Rushdie would be just another man on Facebook.

However, as he is known for his quick tongue and wit, the award winning author did not give up that easily. He saw to it that his grievance was addressed and that his name was changed on Facebook. Salman Facebook said that if F. Scott Fitzgerald was on Facebbok, would Facebook also ask him to change his profile name to Francis Fitzgerald. He used the help of another networking site, Twitter, where he has 10,000 followers, and asked similar questions and showcased his anger with well chosen words that Facebook could not ignore.

After a tough fight, Facebook had to give in and ignore their strict first name policy for the author. After his name was changed back to Salman, an ecstatic Rushdie posted on twitter again, “Victory! #Facebook has buckled! I'm Salman Rushdie again. I feel SO much better. An identity crisis at my age is no fun. Thank you Twitter!’

According to a report posted in dailymail.com, a statement was released by Facebook where they had apologised to the author. However, they added that the first name policy was due to the fact that they want to avoid fake ids and that people can be accountable for the posts that they are updating on their profile.
