Major Akash Singh, who sacrificed his life while fighting infiltrators in Poonch district, was given a hero's farewell by the people of Jammu as the crowd of several hundreds descended on the cremation ground to bid farewell to the army officer.
IT WAS an unusual coincidence, as nobody knows that an army officer who got Commission in the month of September would attain martyrdom in the same month after serving the Army for a decade.
Major Akash Singh Samyal, who sacrificed his life while fighting infiltrators in Mendhar Tehsil of Poonch district in the wee hours on Wednesday (September 9), was commissioned into 5 Maratha Light Infantry on September 04, 1999. An alumni of Officers Training Academy (OTA) Chennai, the young officer attained martyrdom on September 9 after rendering his devoted 10 years of meritorious service in Indian Army. It was a state of shock at the residence of Major’s residence in the Shiv Nagar locality after his father got a call from his Commanding Officer (CO) regarding martyrdom attained by his son. The aged person was not able to decipher what was being said, he called his another son to take the call. The information came around 0300 hrs of Wednesday morning. The caller said that the troops had set up an ambush for the terrorists intending to sneak into Indian side and managed to eliminate two terrorists after giving a brave battle but got hit by a bullet but luck was not on his side as he also got injured and now is no more.
Major’s wife Deepti Samyal was shell-shocked and was unable to hold her tears. However, two children, four-and-half-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son were unable to understand what has happened and were just peering deep into every wet eye at their place. The news spread in the whole locality of the Shiv Nagar and people started pouring to the residence of the dare devil who attained martyrdom. A pal of gloom descended the Jammu City soon after the News Channels flashed the name of Major Akash on screen, who sacrificed his life while defending the Motherland. Major’s friends remembered him as a brave and courageous young man. Avdhesh of Shiv Nagar, who is one of Akash Singh’s friends, said he got this news suddenly in the morning when he had gone to drop his kids at the school bus stop. The 34-year-old Major of 5 Maratha Light Infantry gallantly, who laid down his life fighting the terrorists, served in the counter insurgency areas of Jammu and Kashmir and the North East. He was given a hero's farewell by the people of Jammu as the crowd of several hundreds descended on Shakti Nagar cremation ground to bid farewell to the army officer. The moment the Indian tricolour wrapped coffin of Major Singh arrived at the cremation ground, people jostled to touch it. "He was a brave son of the soil, we all have come here to pay respect to him," said Rajesh, one of the mourners. Mourners simply recall that the September month has proved a significant month in martyr’s destiny as he saw a new lifestyle in his life when he joined the army in Sept 4 in 1999, while in the same month after ten years, he joined the lotus feet of Almighty on Wednesday Sept 9, 2009, which was being looked by many as a strange date depicting 09/09/09.
