EMINENT INTERNATIONAL scientists and bureaucrats discussed “Higher Education in 21st Century” on the fourth day of ongoing Science Conclave organized by Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad on Saturday.
The panelists included RP Agrawal, IAS and currently Chairman, Board of Governors’, IIT New Delhi, Nobel scientists Roald Hoffman and Richard Ernst, scientists Helmut Schwarz, Stuart Parkin, Ramesh Chandra, Anish arora, Ramjee Prasad, Graham weight, Radhakrishna, Dr MD Tiwari and M.Radhakrishnan, in the morning session they discussed the existing problems in the higher education system. They raised several issued like the shortage of PhD and M.Tech students that could be utilized as the teaching staff. There was a discussion on the educational reforms taken by the Indian government like the subsidy given to the students in the loan, pay revision for the teachers and others. In the last portion of his talk he talked about how to revive the respect associated with the teaching field.
Prof. Richard Ernst expressed his concern towards the education system in India due to the lack of universities and proper collaboration between the foreign universities and Indian universities. He stated that India has to be able to attract foreign faculties to their countries that’s very important and will only be achieved by the good collaboration among the global universities.Prof M Ananda Krishnan, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Kanpur said that we on one side recognize that Indian higher education system in getting more and more integrated into the global system. But the bigger challenge is higher education and the human face. The disconnection between higher education and Indian values is visible. Prof. Ramji Prasad, Director CTIF, Alborg University, Denmark in his address raised a question that why Indians become famous when they leave India? The reason for asking this question was the raise the concern over the salary issues of the teachers and professors in India. He also raised the issues regarding the family responsibilities that are faced by the Indian professors and teachers and how they come in the way of becoming a quality educator. In the address he talked about the issues like the top 10 universities in the US have Indians excelling there and the need to attract those kind of Indians who are of Indian origin and are working outside India so they can work for the betterment of the education in India. He talked about the steps to be taken by the Indian govt. by giving the example of Denmark where the people who come from outside Denmark are given a tax relaxation for 5 years, so that he monetary gains can attract the quality educators from outside the country.
