It is worth to mention that the hills of Chapanala and Choto Kondoli are the shelters of different species like leopards, monkeys, birds and snakes and the destructions made by human have pushed them away.
IT HAS been noticed that the process of soil degradation at an alarming rate particularly in the foot hills of Chapanala, Borjuri, Salna, Choto Kondoli of Nagaon district in Assam and some part of the Karbi Anglong are due to mushrooming of stone quarries. The rapid cutting of hills, clearing forests to setup stone quarries has degraded the panoramic view of the area which is surrounded by thick forest, tea gardens and wetlands. It is obvious that indiscriminate cutting of hills in these regions has become a major environmental issue.
These regions are mainly dominated by tea labourers and cultivators. Due to such hill cutting the mostly affected sectors of this region will be its weather and climate, geomorphology and hydrology, and the indigenous flora and fauna. The nature and life style of these regions intimately related with the hills are thus under the threat of a drastic imbalance in its ecosystem.
There are few quarries in that region which were setup illegally. Beside the forest department putting strict vigilance over cutting of trees or hills, but some unscrupulous businessman are still engaged in the destruction of hills. Hill destruction for personal interests or profit caused effects on the weather changing which is hampering the ecosystem seriously.
It is worth to mention that the hills of Chapanala and Choto Kondoli are the shelters of different species like leopards, monkeys, birds and snakes and the destructions made by human have pushed them away.
It is clear that the extent of the hill cutting for stone quarries in these particular areas is a matter of concern that needs some special attention to be paid. Such an indiscriminate destruction of hills in the region will result in drastic consequence on its nature and ecosystem threatening life and properties.
