Himachal Pradesh to launch crop diversification project
Exchange of Notes were signed between Government of India, Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs and Government of Japan at New Delhi for implementation of Rs. 321 crores crop diversification project.
WHILE TALKING to this scribe on Friday at Dharmshala Circuit House, Himachal Chief Minister Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal disclosed  that the Exchange of Notes were signed between Government of India, Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs and Government of Japan at New Delhi for implementation of Rs. 321 crores Himachal Pradesh Crop Diversification Promotion Project.
 
The project will be implemented in the state soon so as to promote crop diversification through development of necessary infrastructure such as irrigation facilities and farm access roads in parallel with technical training for farmers on organic farming, vegetable cultivation, food crops cultivation and post harvest technology.
Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal said that the state government was pursuing for clearance of this project for the last two years so as to fulfill its commitment for improving the economy of the farmers. 

Ram Subhag Singh, Secretary, Agriculture, said that the project would be implemented by the Project Management Unit which shall be established for the project outside the Department of Agriculture, as an autonomous body. 

He said that this project would be implemented in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for crop diversification in Himachal Pradesh as a comprehensive programme mainly focusing on development of crop diversification model based on activities in one selected pilot sub-project and capacity development of Extension Officers, who would be deputed for implementation of this project. He said that the officers trained under Technical Cooperation Project would expand this crop diversification model to sub-project areas.

Ram Subhag Singh further said that the project would be implemented through People’s Participation Model i.e. community mobilisation and organization of Water User Associations (WUA).

He said that project would enhance livelihood opportunities through promotion of high value crops, agro based entrepreneurs, ensuring sound demand driven marketing system and capacity building of farming communities to take over operation and maintenance. 

He said that Crop diversification model will be expanded to 210 sub-projects in phased manner. The total area to be irrigated would be 3,712 hac. He said that Farmers Interest Groups would be formed in each sub-project for collective activities such as hand holding on training of vegetable cultivation, collection and sale of products and operation and maintenance of irrigation facilities.
