HINDUS HAVE commended Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales (CBCEW) for re-establishing the practice of “abstaining from meat” on Fridays, which will come into effect from September 16.
CBCEW, in its spring plenary session, in Leeds, on May 9-12, reportedly resolved to re-establish the practice of Friday penance effective September 16, which “should be fulfilled by abstaining from meat”. “The law of the Church requires Catholics to abstain from meat on Fridays”, it pointed out.
Esteemed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that abstaining from meat, besides being good for ethical and health reasons, would also help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions also.
Why to restrict it only to England and Wales? Being the Church law, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI should issue a worldwide directive of meatless Fridays from the Vatican City to be followed by every Catholic, Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, stressed.
Rajan Zed pointed out that Hinduism promoted strict vegetarianism insisting on ahimsa (not harming living creatures) and non-killing, and renouncing animal slaughter and meat eating. It suggested taking of sattvik (vegetables, fruits, etc.) and avoiding rajasik (eggs, etc.) and tamasik (meat, intoxicants, etc.) foods.
Zed argued that there was extensive protection of life in Hinduism and ahimsa was a command. All the major religions of the world were opposed to killing, he added.
Rajan Zed has also thrown his weight behind Beatle Sir Paul McCartney’s call for Meat-Free Monday movement, which aims at persuading public to go vegetarian once a week to slow global warming.
Zed further said that as eating less meat would help the environment, more religions and celebrities should come out in support of at least staying away from meat once a week, thus contributing to a healthier world.
CBCEW, headquartered in London, “is the permanent assembly of Catholic bishops in these two countries", whose values include: “Inclusivity, Service, Solidarity, Spirituality, Stewardship". Archbishop of Westminster Most Reverend Vincent Nichols is the President, while Rev Fr Marcus Stock is General Secretary.
Roman Catholics are the largest single denomination in Christianity headed by Pope. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal.
