Hindus urge Brazil to end reported discrimination against Afro-Brazilian religions

Hindus have urged Brazil to look deeply into the reported discrimination against practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions like Candomblé, Umbanda, etc., and come up with a plan to eradicate it.

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that as Article five of Brazil constitution provided for freedom of religion, and discrimination based on religion was prohibited in Brazil law, Brazil should take care of its minority practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions.

Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that everybody should be allowed to freely practice their faith and no one should be discriminated because of their religious beliefs. Religious intolerance was not okay.

According to US Department of State Country Reports on Human Rights Practices 2009 on Brazil, “Practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions like Umbanda and Candomble experienced discrimination in several states, especially Rio de Janeiro, but the NGO Commission to Combat Religious Intolerance in Rio de Janeiro reported that there were no government efforts at prevention during the year. According to the NGO, Afro-Brazilian religious practitioners were not permitted to visit hospitals or penitentiaries to provide religious assistance to patients or inmates, as were other religious practitioners, and the Rio de Janeiro State government had no office to provide effective assistance to victims of religious intolerance”.

Reports indicate that Afro-Brazilian religious groups total about 0.3 percent of the population.

World’s fifth largest country Brazil is known for Amazon, Carnaval, novelist Jorge Amado, beaches, football, music, etc. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is the President. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal.

The discrimination exists, but not in the form of open hate for african religions. None of these religions practices human sacrifice. That is not correct. Candombl???? is the one that remains more loyal to the original african roots. Umbanda is a more "mystical" version of camdombl????, that has many elemnts of other religions and cults mixed in. Macumba is a generic denomination for a number of religious rituals (sympathies, "spells", etc) primarily tied to afro religions. Some macumba rituals may make use of the sacrifice of a chicken or other bird, but that is not the rule. Macumba is also used as a pejorative term to refer to Candombl???? and Umbanda: people who follow these 2 religions don't like to be nicknamed "macumba". Some 6 months ago there was a case that circulated in the international media, about a Brazilian child who had 50 needles inserted into his body by his stepmother during various Camdombl???? rituals: that is not the rule. The fault obviously is the mother's, not the religion - but haters and prejudiced people love to use cases like this to generalize and condemn it.
Hindus should shut up until learning "in vivo" what are Candomble and Umbanda. Brazilians do NOT admit sacrifices in religious rituals - like Voodoo also. We are a pacifist society who do NOT want nor condone such paganist and barbaric activities. We DO admit Macumba, which is an African religion full of African deities, that do not normally uses sacrifices but food offers and the like. Others however even sacrifice HUMAN BABIES and JUST BORN BABIES to "appease the gods". This is BARBARIC, SAVAGE and very much African style - NOT Brazilian. So, SHUT UP and try to prevent DISCRIMINATION and VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN YOUR BACKWARDS SOCIETY!
