Hindus want urgent end to segregation of Roma children

HINDUS WANT segregation of Roma children in schools of Europe to end immediately.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, United States of America, said that it was sad that segregation of Roma children in many European countries was still reportedly continuing.

Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg also recently commented: “School segregation and substandard education is a reality for Roma children in many countries in Europe. The consequences of this are devastating and leave virtually no opportunities for these children to escape poverty and marginalisation later on in life.”

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, stressed that Europe should respect decisions of Strasbourg Court and urgently end reportedly discriminatory treatment of Roma children in its schools. Roma children should be offered same quality education as other children and more ethnically mixed classes should be encouraged.

Segregation cases had been reported in Greece, Croatia and Czech Republic in the past and there had reportedly been incidents when Roma children were denied enrolment, put in separate classes and committed to schools/classes meant for persons with mental disabilities.

Rajan Zed further said that condition of Roma in Europe had most of the signs of ‘apartheid’ and everyone involved was explicitly aware of it. It was now time for Europe to do something ‘concrete and real’ for Roma upliftment. It was a sin to watch the Roma suffer day after day for the last about 1200 years and not do anything about it.

Zed pointed out that it was shocking to see how inhumanely Europe was treating its about 15 million Roma brothers-sisters. It was clearly reprehensible, hazardous and immoral and a blatant failure of Europe to meet its international obligations. When it came to Roma, Europe reportedly frequently failed to implement its own laws distinctly mentioned in its own books. Besides the absence of any serious efforts at their inclusion, Roma were being used as ‘punch bag’ and blamed for the social ills of Europe. European neglect was trapping Roma in cycles of persecution and poverty, Zed added.
