The upcoming bye-elections in several states see tickets being provided by political parties to those with criminal backgrounds apart from the occasional millionaires.
IN THE upcoming UP bye-elections, there are nine candidates with self declared pending criminal cases whereas the ones in Karnataka have two such cases. In relation to this, there have been no such candidates contesting for the upcoming bye-elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya.
Out of these candidates, their are a few with serous charges levied against them. These include Noor Saleem Rana, the BSP candidate contesting from Morna (UP), who has a pending murder case against him; Bhupendra the BJP candidate from Moradabad West, who has a pending attempt to murder charge against him and his opponent from the same constituency Comrade Nem Singh, a CPI candidate, who has a pending charge of culpable homicide against him.On a majority basis, the BJP, Samajwadi Party, BSP and CPI have fielded candidates with criminal backgrounds. In contrast, the Congress party has not fielded any such candidates.
Apart from these, 18 candidates out of the total 104 are Crorepatis. Two candidates who top this list are from Channapatha, Karnataka - CP Yogeshwara (Rs 10. 62 crore) and TK Yogesh (Rs 10.24 crore). The next two candidates with highest assets are from Tamil Nadu, Soundarapandi M from Srivaikuntam (Rs 9.86 crore) and Eswaran ER from Thondumuthur (Rs 8.77 crore).LC Jain, a former member of the planning commission and former DGP of UP, Prakash Singh urged political parties to stop the practice of giving tickets to candidates of dubious background for once and all.
