Hit-and-run case verdict out: Salman Khan convicted!
Salman Khan embroiled in the hit and run case of 2002 in Bandra has been convicted by a Mumbai court for culpable homicide. On Wednesday morning the Judge gave his verdict and said that the actor was under the influence of alcohol and that he was driving his SUV without license. All the charges against the Dabangg actor have proved in the court.

In this case one man sleeping on the pavement was killed Bandra in the wee hours of September 28, 2002. The judge told Salman Khan, "You were driving the car. You were under the influence of alcohol."

It has been 13 years since the 2002 hit and run case of Salman Khan, which took place on September 28 and it was about time that the verdict came out. The 49 year old actor was accused of being in an inebriated state and losing control of his SUV he ran over people sleeping on the pavement of Mumbai. He not only killed a person, but also injured three people in the accident. Since then the people of the media and the general public has seen a lot of twists and turns in this particular case.

The incident happened at the junction of Hill Road and St. Andrews Road, Bandra (W) at the wee hours of the morning. The actor was first arrested and charged with culpable homicide. He was taken by the Police to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra and later in the day to JJ Hospital for blood sampling, and he was then released. He pleaded not guilty stating that his driver (Ashok Singh) was responsible for the incident in which his Toyota Land Cruiser mounted the pavement where five men were sleeping outside a bakery in the upmarket suburb of Bandra West. It was stated by his lawyer (Shrikant Shivade) that the accident happened as Ashok Singh lost control of the car when the left tyre of the car burst.

A constable (PW Ravindra Patil), who was with the actor's security detail gave his statement earlier on in the case that the actor was drunk and that he was behind the wheels. As was reported by guardian.com, Patil, who died in 2007 due to tuberculosis also said, "The people were sleeping on the footpath. Salman and [his cousin] Kamaal ran away from the spot." Another man, who was injured in the incident said that the actor did run after causing the accident.

The actor, as his lawyers said, was drinking water on that fateful night. He did get out of the driver's side of the car, but that was because on his side the door was jammed. His lawyer further stated that the man, who was killed in the incident lost his life when an operation to remove the car was going on.

Moreover, last month Ashok Singh came to court and confessed that he was actually the man behind wheels and not Khan. All this time, supposedly the the driver had no inkling that he needed to come to court and it was only after Salim Khan (Salman's father) came to him that he made a trip to the court.

However, talking to a newspaper, Ashok Singh's wife was bewildered and said that Singh never mentioned that he was driving the SUV on that fateful night. This statement of the driver seemed so foolhardy that the internet went crazy and within hours jokes about the same began circulating.

The actor, who has never married have had other cases filed against him. So much so that he had started a website, wherein he gives details about his cases in length. Known as the salmankhanfiles.com, the actor has given a statement at the very beginning of this site, which says, "Certain court cases are filed against me. There is widespread media reporting of these cases. The reports are sometimes inaccurate and misleading, and cause damage to my reputation, both personal and professional. I have been advised to put up this website to provide easy accessible information about the ongoing status of these cases."

Salman Khan is loved by million of people in India and as the case have progressed, he saw support from his fans as well as people from Bollywood. Before the verdict was out, people wanted the case to just end and to see that the actor got minimal punishment, if any. As the fans love Khan, Twitter trends were often seen with #IStandbySalman trending for hours and days. For the producers, it is a whole different story.

These days, as each films- especially Salman Khan films are made on big budget, hence we can say that a lot of money is riding on the actor. If we take trade analysts Komal Nahta's estimate then it is around 200 crore, which is a huge amount and thus we can understand why the producers want Salman Khan out in the open.

In the recent years, the controversy's child had tried to rebuilt his entire image with his humanitarian work- Being Human and his shows such as Bigg Boss. His shows, twitter handle and sporadic statements on terrorists attacks have carved a man, who is like a coconut- hard from outside, but soft from inside. The man is known to be straight-forward and this image have moulded the public image a lot to his benefit.

People such as Shiny Ahuja, Sanjay Dutt, Tabu, Monica Bedi have also been held up in court cases, but no one has managed to gather such fan support as this Khan. Known for his temper, people seems to give him that extra inch, which most of the celebrities do not get from the common man.
