Punjab govt's claim of raising education standard proves hollow!
The Punjab Government's claim for raising the standard of education look to be hollow with the number of posts lying vacant in the education department since long which has disturbed the teacher-student ratio.

Raj Kishore Kalra, educationist and Patron Punjab Education Reforms Committee speaking to media persons said, the glaring example is the Govt. Model Secondary School, the oldest school in the city. There are about 1900 students from class 6th to 12th and out of it, 1440 students (746 in Plus One and 700 in Plus Two) but there are only 11 lecturers.

"The most interesting factor is that total 16 posts are sanctioned for this school and two posts of Hindi and Social Science are lying vacant since long and 2 such officials are temporarily posted in the education departments," said Kalra.

Kalra said, Punjabi and English, both are compulsory subjects. Against the existing one and two posts, there is a need of 5 lecturers for Punjabi and four for English. Keeping in view the strength of the students, there is a need of 5 more lecturers for other subjects.

He said, in view of shortage of staff, the teachers for classes upto 10th have to teach the students of senior classes directly affecting the teaching of all the classes.

The educationist said, there is no doubt that there is increase in admission in the classes of Plus One and Two in government schools but simultaneously the sanction is accorded for recruitment of more teaches to maintain the teacher-student ratio.

Giving a proposal in this regards, Kalra said, the best course would be to do promotions in all the cadres as it will not put a heavy financial burden on the government except one additional increment and make recruitment in the master cadre and these arrangements will solve the problem of teacher-student ratio apart from maintaining the standard of education.
