Hollywood actress Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame dies at 60
Hollywood actress Carrie Fisher who starred as Princess Leia in George Lucas' 1977 "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" is no more.

The 60-year old American actress and writer was hospitalised on December 23, after suffering a cardiac arrest during a transatlantic flight from London to Los Angeles. Paramedics removed her from the flight and shifted her to the nearest hospital where she was put on ventilator support.

Fisher immortalized the character of Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise. She passed away on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles at the age of 60.

Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd released a statement through family spokesman Simon Halls to PEOPLE magazine. The statement read: "It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,"

"She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly," 24-year old Lourd said. "Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers."

The daughter of famous actress Debbie Reynolds and entertainer Eddie Fisher, Fisher grew up amid the glamorous world of films, TV and theater.

She starred in Star Wars in 1977 at age 19 and also had an affair with co-star Harrison Ford. In addition to the second and third Star Wars films, Fisher's prominent roles in the 80s were in The Blue Brothers, The Man with One Red Shoe, Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters, and later inWhen Harry Met Sally.

Fisher married musician Paul Simon in 1983, whom she divorced a year later in 1984. She later married Brian Lourd, with whom she has a daughter, Billie Lourd, her only child. She had returned to acting after a long gap with the 2015 Star Wars installment, The Force Awakens – in the role of Princess Leia – that had launched her acting career.
