Honest officer Sanjeev Chaturvedi transferred abruptly; health minister defends the decision
Chief Vigilance officer (CVO) of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Sanjeev Chaturvedi, who has uncovered widespread corruption at India's premier hospital has been abruptly transferred from his post by the order of the Union Health Ministry.

Chaturvedi, who has a reputation of being an anti-corruption crusader, has demanded revoking of his transfer orders and contested the decision in a letter written to the secretary of the Ministry of Health. In the letter he has stated that the order bypasses the directions of PMO and Civil Services Board's.

It seems while ignoring Modi's Mantra, where he publicly declared 'na khaunga, na khane dunga' (will not indulge in corruption nor will allow others to eat) and where he talked about new work culture based on honesty and efficiency, health minister Harsh Vardhan has transferred an honest officer from his post.

Harsh Vardhan also defended his decision by saying, "He was not at all eligible for the post that he was holding at AIIMS. We were informed that without the approval of the Central Vigilance Commission, nobody can be assigned the post of CVO anywhere. This was brought to our notice, we took cognizance of the same and removed him from the post," as reported by Deccan Chronical.

Other ministers from BJP also backed his decision saying it was an administrative decision. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, a senior leader from BJP while talking to said, "It was an administrative decision, and their is no internal politics involved in it."

While Rashid Alvi, a senior Congress leader said that it was a bad decision by the government. "I felt very bad for Chaturvedi, government should not have done so. On one side Modi gives lectures about honesty and on the other side his government is doing such things."

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal too came out in strong condemnation of the transfer, and tweeted in Chaturvedi's favour.

Interesting facts about Sanjeev Chaturvedi:

  • Chaturvedi has been transferred 12 times in five years for exposing corruption in the Haryana government.

  • In 2012, when he was selected for the posting in AIIMS, Haryana Government had refused to relieve him from the services. Later he was relieved after an intervention by the Union government

  • During his tenure as AIIMS CVO, he recommended action against several senior AIIMS officials and in same cases, the CBI has registered cases.

  • On 23 May 2014, the health secretary himself has approved that the proposal that appointment of Chaturvedi is per statutory requirements. And now Union Helath Minister is denying the same.
