Honour killings: Government pondering amendment of law
Our government is finally considering legal curbing of the menace of 'honour' killings. Incidents of such killings are reported regularly across India. Even in today's advanced tech age our youth don't have the freedom to marry the one they love.
IN A country where caste topples governments and elections are won by rousing caste sentiments the government is considering amending laws to curb the disgusting social menace called honour killing. During a discussion in Rajya Sabha Minister of State for Home Affairs M Ramachandaran said “A proposal to amend the laws including Indian Penal code, 1860 to take care of situation arising out of honour killings is under consideration of the government. As the amendment of law involves various stages of consideration and wide consultation with state government and stakeholders, no definite time-frame can be indicated”.
Incidents of honour killings are reported regularly throughout India and hundreds more go unnoticed. Even in this advanced tech age boys and girls don’t have freedom to marry someone they love in our country.
Rules and laws can’t abolish a years old predicament, what we need is a sweeping change in attitude. But as long as we are ruled by egotistical politicians, it won’t be possible. These politicians play their card smartly only to exploit society for their individual goals.
