Honour my dignity
Can we for a minute lay down our obsolete mores, superficial differences of religion, caste and geographic boundaries and think hard about why women in India are not safe, even in their own homes.

EVERY 30 minutes or so a woman is being raped in this country. Why are some sections of Indian men so intolerant of the other half of the population? Why is it that the women are always at the receiving end? Why am I being looked at and stripped as if I am some kind of brand and commodity? Similar questions have been bothering for long. And each time I hear about the unthinkable crimes being committed against young girl child or a woman, my heart quivers. And at these moments, I honestly feel the loss of not being born a man.

Can we for a minute lay down our obsolete mores, superficial differences of religion, caste and geographic boundaries and think hard about why women in India are not safe, even in their own homes. I would like to question the higher ups, the young force who clearly shone in the recently held general elections? Does the safety for women ever feature as a top priority in their lengthy arguments? India on the one hand is earning international praise for its economic strides, whereas on the other hand, crimes of all kinds, heard and unheard are being perpetrated against women. Incidents such as rape, sexual exploitation, eve teasing, public groping, dowry deaths, mercy killing, trafficking, female foeticide and gender bias: these are what an average Indian woman has to face in India. Of all the crimes, rape is on the rise.

A recently released report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) stated that a total of 20,737 rape cases were registered in 2007 as against 19,384 in 2006, while the figure was 18,359 in 2005 and 18,233 in 2004 against 15,847 in 2003. Last year's report indicated that there were 38,734 cases of sexual molestation. Crime against woman has increased considerably. There has been a jump of 700 per cent since the time the NCRB started keeping records. As per the same report, Delhi reported 29.5 per cent (524 out of 1,775) of total rape cases, 31.8 per cent (1,021 out of 3,207) of the total cases of kidnapping and abduction of women, 15.6 per cent (111 out of 711) of the total cases of dowry deaths, 14.2 per cent (1,711 out of 12,031) of total cases of cruelty by husband and relatives and 21.5 per cent (744 out of 3,463) of total cases of molestation. But the picture is almost the same in Gurgaon, Mumbai, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab or some other nondescript town or village. The fact of the matter is, this country is extremely unsafe for women. What is the root cause behind this behavioral and physical malice? What agitates them to resort to such a violation of dignity?

How can somebody get pleasure by causing pain and suffering to others? Some sections of society are of the opinion that we as woman ask for such crimes by forgetting our morals, wearing dresses that tempt men, by pubbing and by flouting our traditions and culture. This is indeed utter nonsense and nothing but a blinkered opinion. Let us call upon all faith leaders, political heavyweights, self-acclaimed activists and celebrities from the entertainment industry. As you rant and rave in front of the camera on every issue, somewhere some unthinkable crime is being committed against a woman. As a woman I have been forced to feel paranoid about my surroundings and safety. As a citizen, I am deeply frustrated and angry. And I am sure I am not the only one with this feeling.

.Dear All, I didn't pen down my thoughts to antogonise any particular gender.I didn't right about how the law is unfair to woman. The article is a very subjective piece and doesn't reflect feminism. Therefore please don't club it with the later.Every article will have many dimensions to it, and I am thankful to you all, for sharing your viewpoints . .I had a look at comments below. I agree with Rupali that there are multitudes of laws for women and nothing to protect men. Though, nobody disputes the need for such laws, what is clearly unacceptable is there misuse. I strongly feel that in each of these laws, a clause should be added that, if the complaints are found to be false, the woman doing the false complaints would be prosecuted with the same amount of punishment, as entailed by that specific law. Preeti, to be very fair, due to misuse of 498a provision, many woen have suffered and continue to suffer. For each wrong women (daughter in law), there are more women (mother in law, sister in law) who are put behind bars, without any enquiry as to the truthness of the complaint. When eventually, as pointed out here, the law acquits them, the (sick) woman does not get any punishment for getting others behind bars on frivolous complaint. Hope you identify both mother in law and sister in law's as women.
.Women get Free education , less taxes on the same income , special seats in public transport , special trains , Special buses , reservations in jobs , always on the recieving scale of alimony in a marraige, Has 15 laws to protect her in a marraige while man has not even 1 law to protect him againt his vicious wife , has 498A , DV act which is misused by them 98% of cases ( government claims so ) , gets child custody in all cases if the marraige breaks down , have thousands of crores allocated every year in development funds Have you ever considered the conditon of men in India ? They do all the hazardous work , pay 80% of the countries taxes , Have no mens ministry ( we even have an animal ministry ) , More than 56000 married men commit suicide every year , they always discriminated againt in divorce courts by biased laws and biased judiciary , Womens version is always considered to be the truth whole men are always considered to be liars , more than 139,000 false 498A cases are filed every year againt men 98% of which are false . More than 126000 women ( mothers, sisters ) have been falsely arrested in the lats 4 years under section 498A based on a simple complaint by the wife . Recetly there was agang rape of a mother in a police stattion in Bhopal where she was held becase of a false 498A complaint . We have not heard a single womens organisation raise their voice agaist that incident . I believe we are so hubg upon the feministic jingoism and bending backwards to provode for women that men have become almost disposible commodity in India now . Do women feminists ever think about welfare of men , NEVER ! , so why do they expect men to think og their welfare ?
.Really ? I believe Men need far more protection from women than women from men !! As far as marital laws are concerned Indian women have always had the upper hand . The NCRB statistics also say that more than 56000 married men commit suicide every year as compared to only 26000 women . So twice the number of men cmmit suicide . Here is the statistics from NCRB for your eduation . Official Statistics (Source: NCRB) Males Females Suicide of MARRIED persons (2005-2007) 1,65,528 88,121 SUICIDE Rate (Married) 65.25% 4.75% One SUICIDE in Every 9.52 Mins 18 Mins Number of MURDERS 26467 7952 One Murder in Every 19Mins 66Mins No of 498a /year 1,39,058 NA MEN NEED TWICE TH PROTECTION AS WOMEN IN INDIA. However the feminist juggernaught spreads false rhetoric vacked with false and fudged numbers to exagerrate claims and demand more biased laws .

Pinki , Do you see the 'upper hand' now ? Now you see that there are 15 laws created specifically for women and NOT A SINGLE LAW FOR MEN . Men are killing themselves at twice the rate of women in the country . What are we doing about them ? NOTHING !! What does a man and his family do when he is trapped in these laws by his vicious wife and greedy in-laws ( includes FIL and BIL also ) ? Please do not make it a fight between the genders , because it is not. Men from the girls side also misuse these biased laws created for women to extract revenge from the husband . The behavior of men and women cannot be changed but the laws can be . We demand that all marital laws be made gender neutral so that punishment will be meted out irrespective if gender bias .
10. Section 18 of the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act: Another provision for maintenance to wives. 11. Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961: Though gender neutral in its definition, this Act is largely used to protect women and there are also some judgments for cases filed under this Act, which are gender biased towards women. 12. Immortal Trafficking Prevention Act: Deals with trafficking of women. 13. Indecent Representation of Women Act: Title is self-explanatory. 14. Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act: Empowers women to abort their unborn children legally. 15. Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act: Meant to tackle Domestic Violence faced by women. These are some of the laws and Acts made to protect and empower women true to the best of my knowledge; I might have missed a few of them. However, these are only illustrative and not exhaustive of the fact that women are not only over-protected but pampered in this so called Male Dominated Society, whereas men do not have even a single NGO funded by the Govt. to be fighting for mens cause let alone any law, section, Act or a commission or a ministry. It should give a fairly clear idea as to how unequally men and women are placed in this gender war wherein actually men are dragged into uncalled for. On one hand, where women have weapons to the tune of Surface to air missiles to their kitty as their arsenal, men do not even have a Rampuri Chaku at their disposal.
I will now proceed to list down some laws meant specifically for women, 1) Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC): This section is formulated for married women who face physical and mental harassment from husband and in-laws and the cruelty is made for any unreasonable demand (mostly dowry) from the woman and the cruelty is of such nature that it drives the woman to commit suicide or can be a danger to the life and limb of the woman. 2) Section 354 of the IPC: Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty. 3) Section 509 of the IPC: Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman. 4) Section 375 and 376 of the IPC: Rape of a woman. 5) Section 498 of the IPC: Enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a married woman 6) Section 98 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC): Power to compel restoration of abducted females. 7) Section 125 of the CrPC: Meant to provide no-fault maintenance to wife from husband. 8) Section 24 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (HMA): Though gender neutral, is largely used by women to extract maintenance from their husbands in pendency of a divorce. 9) Section 25 of the HMA: Meant to provide alimony to women from divorce.
.I completely agree with the author.Its a well-written article.
