Hotel for the dead in Japan
In Japan people have to wait for a crematorium. A unique hotel in Japan allows people to lay their loved ones in a place where their bodies won't decompose while waiting for the crematorium.

PEOPLE WHO have more of an adventurous sense and want to look for something different even when they are relaxing, are encouraging hoteliers to make hotels that are a far cry from the luxurious bedrooms, spa and dining hall that constitute an everyday good hotel. One would be surprised to know that there are some out-of-the-box ideas in the form of hotels such as the tree House hotel in India, World’s undersea hotel in Fiji, Drain Pipe hotel in Austria and Prison Hotel in Germany. These are some few hotels from a long list, and every one of them represent something unique and the tourists who stay in them all have a memorable time.

All the above hotels, at least, have rooms in some shape for people to go and live but a particular hotel in Japan is exclusively for the dead as they have cold storage spaces. A young couple was astonished to find that a hotel they chanced upon in Japan have no space for the living as they only gave a room in the cold storage area to the dead.

The unique hotel named the Lastel hotel is situated in Yokohama and it houses the dead so that they can be visited by the beloved people as and when they want. The dead bodies are kept in a refrigerator space but they are not permanent visitors as they are only waiting their turn for the crematorium. The hotel also reflects that the city is so populated and the death rate is high that dead bodies cannot be burnt immediately. Thus, the idea of the hotel for the dead does great business. Experts say that deaths in Japan are booming now, and business coming from the same is also very profitable. The annual deaths in Japan by 2040 are expected to touch 1.66 million.

In Yokohama city, the average time that a family has to wait in order to get the crematorium is four days and for them this hotel is a blessing. The refrigerator coffins in the hotel take 12,000 yen ($157) and at a time 18 dead bodies can be housed in this place. Hotel owner Hisayoshi Teramura doesn’t allow living people under the roof and tells them that they only have a cold room. This hotel is serving in a big way as around 23,000 people die in Japan in a year. If a space is not provided then the people are forced to keep the bodies in their home, which is very unhygienic and depressing.
