Sometimes spam SMSes can be misleading and can lead to much misery and regret. Lately, many 'agents' send mobile messages promising loans of many kinds. Often, they collect documents and disappear - using them to procure mobile connections.
OVER THE period of a day many of us receive SMSes sent out by 'agents' offering to negotiate bank loans for several things such as buying a home, automobile, and procuring education degrees.
The following is a personal experience that readers of this article can use to be wary of such mobile communication that promise a lot but don't deliver. In plains-speak, this is called fraud or cheating. What happened was that I was in the process of procuring Loan against Property. I contacted an agent whose number I found in my SMS inbox in my mobile - offering different types of loans.
The person who had contacted be via SMS came and collected my documents, photocopies of bank statement for 6 months, PAN Card, ITR Return with financials for the past 3 years, ID Proof, residence proof, and 2 photographs. Nothing happened for a few days. I contacted this agent who told me that my loan did not get approved. Meanwhile, I contacted 2 more agents (DSA - Direct Sales Agents of Banks). This is what they call themselves. I gave my documents to these agents for processing of loan. A few days later I tried speaking to them but they never answered my calls. By now I became quite restless as to why these DSAs collect documents that are highly confidential in nature, viz. ITR with financials, and bank statements, etc. After collecting these important documents they vanished and don't even give a feedback on the status of my application. I discussed this with my CA who told me that these agents collect these documents - based on which they get SIM cards for pre-paid mobile connections! So, beware of SMSes that seem official and promise to deliver what you require, but in fact are messages that are well-laid traps. Such false business communication is much more destructive a threat than the bugging calls from banks, etc., for investment, which one can ignore. The government should take action against such people after complaints are filed against them.
