According to sources, Shanta Kumar, who was asked by the Union Home minister, Rajnath Singh who is under pressure from Parkash Singh Badal for holding talks with him on the issue, instead of holding one to one one meeting with Badal, preferred to talk to him over phone.
It was felt that any meeting will give unnecessary importance to Badal. Shanta Kumar reportedly conveyed to Badal in a clear cut manner that party was totally opposed to his leading any morcha while continuing as Chief Minister. Badal was also conveyed that in case he imposes his son Sukhbir Singh Badal as his successor then party will have second thoughts about continuing the alliance.
Badal who was following a well planned script of installing his son as his successor in guise of fighting for the rights of Sikhs was reportedly shocked and had to take a complete u-turn. Rest is part of history. For Badal's face saving, newly appointed Haryana Governor Solanki may be asked to seek legal opinion on the issue, which will take much time.
Shanta Kumar's smart action has saved BJP from the embarrassment, as well as as foiled the strategy of Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, as with the separate body issue hitting the media headlines, all other issues were gone in background.
Although Parkash Singh Badal is trusted partner of BJP but his party's performance in just concluded Lok Sabha polls has forced BJP to think about continuing their alliance with him in Punjab. Even Arun Jaitely had to face defeat in Amritsar.
Describing Akal Takht's intervention as historic, former Punjab Chief Minister, Amrinder Singh said that it has defused the situation as otherwise Akali Dal would have ended up with fighting with Sikhs of Haryana.
