How can we enhance our mental fitness?
People make a lot of efforts for their physical fitness with the belief that 'a sound mind resides in a sound body'. But this is a partial truth only since for a sound mind or better mental fitness, one has make special efforts. For me, both sound body and sound mind are mutually supportive and need to work in harmony.

Mental fitness is an acquired sound state of emotional and psychological well-being of a person.  It prepares a person to use optimally his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities for lifelong learning and living, function contributively in society, and coping skills in everyday life.

On the other hand, mental illness or disorders caused due to lack of mental fitness, is a branch of medicine that has been created to deal with restoration and maintenance of psychological well-being through medical procedures.

In present times, a person’s overall emotional and psychological condition or his or her mental health depends how well the person deals with daily stress and worries. Give yourself some time every day to enhance your mental fitness to have a feeling of well being.

Here are some important tips to practice mental fitness:

  • Daily, do 5 minutes of positive imagery twice a day by closing your eyes and imagining yourself in a dream location like a forest, stream, mountain, etc. and breathe slowly and deeply. It is a sort of well-being inducing ‘pranayama’.
  • Sit in your house lawn on or a park and breathe in the fragrances and fresh air. See the flowers in your mind’s eye and relax yourself. Remember relaxation is the key to mental fitness.
  • Indulge in group laughter yoga, morning walks, group exercises, etc. to connect with people sharing a common goal.
  • Have a hobby and enjoy doing it during your leisure to get free of the pressure of everyday tasks and keep your brain active. Gardening and cooking can be taken up as easily accessible hobbies.
  • Try to cultivate some humour in life. Share humour to make yourself and others smile or laugh, share it with someone you know. A little humour can go a long way to keeping us mentally fit!
  • Become a week-end volunteer since helping others makes us feel good about ourselves by widening our social network along with providing new learning experiences.
