Experts on communication have articulated the importance of vocabulary. It's a significant armory in your mental faculty, more the arrows, better it will be for you to express your ideas, thought process, opinions and views.

OF COURSE, grammar and fluency over the language is important but the importance of vocabulary can’t be ruled out. Well, before delving into how to augment your vocabulary, let’s first understand the importance of vocabulary. The way you speak, use words, phrases, idioms depicts your command over the language. Experts on communication have articulated the importance of vocabulary: it’s a significant armory in your mental faculty, more the arrows, better it will be for you to express your ideas, thought process, opinions and views.

There are several ways to improve one's vocabulary. I am sharing some of them, hoping they will be instrumental in enhancing your vocabulary. Remember, there is no hard and fast formula to enhance your vocabulary. You have to grind your mental faculty smartly.

The wonder of learning two words a day, consistency is the key:

Two news words a day:

  1. In a month: 2X30= 60
  2. In a year: 60X12= 720

Thus, in a year you are adding 720 new words in your armory of vocabulary. There is one more interesting twist to this formula. You are not adding 720 new words, but many more.

Two new words:

For instance: Depict and Sheen

For each word, write two synonyms:

Depict: Show and Illustrate
Sheen: Luster and Shine

Thus, you are not learning two words daily but six. Therefore in a year, you are learning:
180x12= 2160 new words.

Follow revision process without a miss; revise your vocabulary once in a week.

For every new word, you are learning, carry out two sentence formation based on daily life, office communication etc, etc…For instance:

Depict:

  1. While working in a team, depict your team spirit.
  2. Depictyour positive qualities, true character during work pressure.

How to pick up the new words?
Pick the new words from English news Channels, news portals, news papers, and magazines such as NDTV, CNBC, Geography, History, Times Now, Times of India, Deccan Chronicle, Business Standard and Femina.

Learn from colleagues and seniors

Learn new words from your colleagues and seniors; look at the way, they communicate, use words.

Do away with the hesitation

The hesitation acts as a curse in learning many things; don’t let hesitation curb your desire to learn things from seniors and colleagues. Feel free to raise your query/issues.

Also, make it a habit to use new words in your day to day communication; written as well as oral as more you use new words, better they will be in your memory.

Is this exercise worth practice? Of course, I am sure; it will do wonders for you, provided you follow it earnestly. Bear in mind that words define ideology, offers solution, send out messages, represents your personality. Do you still want to snub the importance of vocabulary? Think twice before snubbing this exercise. Follow the recommendations, and experience the magic of fascinating vocabulary.

Cheers! Hope the recommendations will add feather in your personality.
