BEWARE MOBILE phone owners, who do not have a unique identification number as their phones will stop ringing from tomorrow as the government has directed the mobile operators to stop process calls from such phones.
The 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique number, which is alloted to every mobile phone for identification. It represents the name of mobile maker, type of phone and it gets registered with the mobile phone operator as soon as the mobile set is activated.
IMEI number is also important in the sense that it helps the intelligence agencies to keep a tab on mobile phone users. If an person uses mobile phone for anti-national activities, the IMEI number can be used to track the set and catch the culprit.
It is in context of this hidden threats that government has decided to ban all mobiles phones, which do not have IMEI numbers or have a duplicate number. India as per rough estimates has more than 25 million handsets in circulation without IMEI numbers.
However, every thing is not lost for people who do not have IMEI numbers as they can obtain the same from Mobile Standards Alliance of India for Rs 199.
