How to reform schools driven by market-logic of competition and profit making?
Often an education reform is meant to change the education system by formulating new policies at the top level and asking schools systems to implement those but such measures have invariably failed and turned education into a market.

In India, currently education reform is based on the 'market-logic of competition', ranking children, branding schools, awarding teachers and principals by privately instituted awards.

All this is breeding inequalities and insensitivities. This type of reform, turns education into a commodity to be aggressively marketed and criminalizes education itself, I feel.

According to Vivien Stewart of Asia Society, policies are frequently enacted without the support to schools and are unable to affect classroom processes unless curriculum, teacher preparation, professional development, and assessment are all aligned and consistent to the proposed reform. The reform makes a dent only if each school takes up the initiative to reform itself.

The imposition stricter rules and administrative reforms through orders or notices leading to expulsions, bans and fines often lead to making children and adults and habitual offenders and clever hoodwinkers. It has been rightly said that old habits never die. They become subtler offenders with bans and fines. In fact, the new tricks get invented about 'How not to get caught' since a new challenge is provided to the offender to beat the ban or sidetrack the stricter rules.

Much more emphasis is required for preventive education and developing an attitude of not to indulge into bad acts among the children. For this one would require to catch them young. The preventive wholesome education to the young both at home and in schools needs to be provided. Some of the preventive education measures for the young could be as follows.

Development of the following life skills is required in schools.

• Skill of making informed choices
• Skill of saying no to peer pressure
• Self-evaluation skill

The roots of inappropriate behavior are invariably imbedded in the early experience and history of an individual. For developing an appropriate behavior, the following actions are required at the school and home levels.

•  Favourable emotional environment
•  Friendly relationship
•  Self-learning strategies including self development and self awareness
•  Analytical and rational thinking skills

Also, there is a need to strengthen the factors for positive thinking. The following things need to be done in this respect.

• Expansion of sound recreational activities and facilities
• Providing a feeling of success
• Creating a social support system
• Organizing genuine clubs and interest groups

Besides the foregoing, a vigilant supportive supervision of elders at home and teachers in school can be helpful for detecting early indulgence in unworthy behaviour and immediate corrective action. Unworthy behavior, before it becomes a habit and addiction, it should get detected and corrected. After all, prevention is better than cure through counselling and stricter rules.
