How to survive as a content writer in the corporate cocoon?
A content writer is like a comedy hero (comedian) in a Bollywood movie. They are essential and ubiquitous, but the best actor award always goes to the romantic hero. Similarly, content writers are one of the most important pillars of any organization. However, most of their credits are bagged by so-called-MBA-professionals.

Anyone with even a 1 month of work experience in the domain of content or copy writing would understand what I meant in the above 2-lines.

Gone are the days when being a writer came along with unmatched perks. Let's take a trip down the memory lane:

During the 30s and 40s, copywriters had the liberty to play with words, puns, jokes, over-explain, and amplify. Long copy advertisements dominated the industry and could wreak havoc in society.

As time fled, the 60s and 70s belonged to writers who were instructed to pen true, honest, blatant, and uncluttered communication.

By the 80s and 90s, the long copy advertisements were dead. Pictures, images, and visuals became a rage and started doing the trick.

The year 2000 and the following years were life changing for the dated writer. Copywriting became a spammy profession with at large focus on obnoxious practices like cramping of keywords, doorway pages, and planting of unethical links. No wonder I hate SEO professionals and SEO as a profession (not the SEO original people).

Google might have made the life of the world easy but it is a murderer. It had murdered the original writer in all and sundry.

Yet, if you want to survive and thrive in this cruel murderous corporate world, try the below mentioned tips. After all there is a way you have to earn a living.

1)      You are a bracket – The world of digital is impossible without content. Everything you read, hear, or watch is content. Hence, as a content person you can never be out of work. That 75% people don't like to read is a harsh truth and we got to make peace with it. The best way to keep your place cemented would be to become more and more valuable. You have to understand how different mediums work and ensure that you can write efficiently for them.  For example, if there is a company blog that you are asked to work on, you have to gauge if videos will be able to grab more eyeballs than plain text. So, go on and start writing video scripts. Be it social media, blogs, website, mailers, meta tags, brochures, OOH, leaflets, white papers, visiting cards, pamphlets, testimonials, company FAQs, Twitter chats, Facebook live, or Google ads -  you should be able to write for anything for anything. In a nutshell - you have to become a bracket.

2)      Creativity up your sleeves – It is true and rightly so – it's the original ideas you come up with that matter and make a difference. If you are the one who can only execute an already present idea or punch the keyboard, you will remain a puppet for your entire life. Think, think, and keep thinking. And, believe me writers know how to think in the best way possible and if you learn the trick you will become an invaluable entity for your organization. Creativity is not using big words or filling a form with jargons which 1 or 2 people, other than you know. It is about presently a product or service in the best way possible.

3)      Don't be creative – The brand managers or SEO people you work with are no nonsense yet not-open-to-creative-stuff. At times, you would want to fire these people you are working with. However, the intelligent ones will shut down their creative button and push open the drag tab. Just understand the company requirement and vomit what's required. Don't waste your creative sense when not valued. Keep the grammar intact and language simple. Bear in mind, there are people employed only to criticise you. Just trespass through them like you care a dam. Believe me your live will be better and free of rubbish. 

If you want to work as content or a copy professional, just follow the above tips. For the inflow of water you will have to lift the tap open but make sure you have an empty vessel or someone wanting to drink water. Else, it would go in vain.
