ON TUESDAY, January 19, 2010, the Human Resource ministry decided to withdraw the deemed university status from forty four universities asserting that they were being run as family fiefdoms rather than on academic considerations. The news spread across the country like fire and left people shocked and shaken and especially those students who are currently pursuing courses from these institutions or those who have recently passed out.
Keeping in mind the future of over two lakh students who have enrolled in these 44 universities which are spread across thirteen states, the centre has said that the students will be allowed to revert back as affiliated colleges of their original universities.
HRD ministry has filed an affidavit for the recommendations of the decisions taken by the Education ministry. According to the review committees these institutions were being controlled and managed by families rather than professionals. The management, infrastructure and quality of education were not up to the mark as claimed by review committee and Education ministry of the country.
These forty four universities offer both graduate and post graduate level courses and have more than two lakh students studying all over the country. The review committee has said that there is no systematic admission procedure and student intake per year was much more than actual capacity.
The decision of agreeing with the ministry over the issue is fair enough but we cannot take the future of lakhs of students for granted. The ministry has decided that the students who already possess the degree of these universities or those who are currently pursuing the courses won’t get affected. They also have the option of migrating to other universities to pursue the same courses. There is a lot of unrest and strife among the students about this decision. In Chennai, students are protesting against it.
However, I would say, our Education ministry has taken a very logical and fair decision. This conclusion may lead to dissemination of high quality education to the students along with good learning atmosphere and other essential facilities which will be provided by the deemed universities. Let’s just hope for the good and bright future of these students.
